TRI-VALLEY ANNOUNCES HEAD COACHING SELECTIONS FOR THE 2008-2009 SEASON

The Tri-Valley Minor Hockey Association is pleased to announce the selection of the following head coaches for the 2008-2009 season.

Returning as head coach of the Midget 18's is Mike Holmes, and Randy Stewart will once again lead the Midget 16's. At the Peewee level, John Young returns to lead the "A" team and Bill Davis will guide the "B" team. The Squirts will be lead by Joe Carranza, who moves up from the Mite X level.

Two new changes in the coaching lineup are expected to bring a new level of enthusiasm to the club after a very successful 2007-2008 season.

New head coaches include Doug Miller at Mite X and Jim Gemmell with the Bantams.

The new coaching lineup keeps our hockey club among the best in Northern California with a balance of excellent veteran experience and new and exciting leadership.

Mike Holmes - Midget 18 Head Coach

Mike's Midget 18's are the NORCAL and CAHA STATE CHAMPIONS for 2006-2007!

Mike Holmes played two years 1972-73 and 1973-74 with the Penticton Broncos of the BC Junior A league, voted second team all star as team captain in his second year. Went on to Northeastern University on Hockey Scholarship from 1974 to 1978.

At Northeastern Holmes had career totals of 25 goals and 127 assists in 108 games over four varsity seasons, Holmes is the University's career assists leader and currently sits in tenth place on the all-time scoring list. NU's all-time leading scorer for defensemen . Was Rookie of the Year as a freshman. Was named captain of the Huskies as a junior and lead the team in scoring with 10 goals and and 33 assist for a career best 43 points in 28 games and was named Most Valuable Player for the 1976-77 season . An amazingly consistent career at Northeastern paved the way to a tryout with the Boston Bruins. Holmes went on to play two full seasons in the Bruins organization in Grand Rapids MI, earning Best Defenseman honors both season. Holmes was elected to the Northeastern Hall of Fame in 1991 for his accomplishments in the sport of ice hockey. Holmes has coached at Tri Valley the last 10 years and has been Director of Coaches for 5 years and holds a Level 4 Coaches Certification.

Randy Stewart - Midget 16A Head Coach

Randy's Midget 16A's are the current CAHA STATE CHAMPIONS for 2006-2007!

Randy holds a Level 5 Master Coaches Certification and may be the only currently active level 5 coach in Norcal. Randy has coached at both San Jose and Tri Valley.

John Young - Peewee Head Coach

John has been a coach with Tri-Valley for the past 5 years and holds a level three coaches certification.

John played youth hockey in Norcal AAA at PW, Bantam, and Midget level, winning 2 State Championships at AAA and 2 State Championships at AA level and also at North Vancouver, B.C. - , winning the Provincial Championships in 1977.

John played his collegiate hockey with the UCLA Hockey team from 1987-1991. Captain 1989-1991.  PCHA Champions 1989, 1991. His previous teaching experience includes the  Rocky Mountain Hockey School, Boulder, CO & St. Joseph, MO, 1985-87 and the San Jose Sharks - Elite Boarding Camp, 1992. Working with Kevin Constantine. Currently playing in 36th consecutive Hockey Season.

Tom O'Connell - Squirt Head Coach

Tom has coached with Tri-Valley since 2002. Tom has three sons with Sean and Brian currently playing at Tri-Valley and Reed soon to take to the ice. Tom acquired a love of hockey growing up in New England playing street hockey, pond hockey, and town travel hockey. He continued on playing hockey in adult leagues after moving to California in 1986 and continues to play hockey today.

Joe Carranza - Mite X Head Coach

Joe has been involved with the Tri Valley Blue Devils for the past three years, helping on the ice with the In-house mites during the 2004-2005 season and summer program. He also was an Assistant Coach on the 2006-2007 Mite-X travel team. Joe has a son Michael and daughter Rachel currently playing at Tri-Valley at the Mite and Squirt level all with the enthusiastic support of his lovely bride Sharry.

Joe played hockey for several years in the early 70's at Berkeley Iceland and started playing again ten years ago at the age of 35.

John Burgess - Squirt Assistant Coach

John was head coach of the Squirt B Team this past season. Prior to the coaching experience with Tri-Valley, John has coached minor hockey at the Atom / PeeWee level in Ottawa and at the PeeWee level in Calgary. John has also "organized and co-ordinated" adult rec hockey teams - mostly tournament teams when living overseas in Asia. John also has head coaching experience with the San Ramon Soccer club for the past 4 years.

John has played hockey in some form pretty much all his life. He grew up playing in the North Gloucester club in Ottawa and has continued to play recreational hockey as an adult - including finding opportunities to play while living overseas in Europe and Asia.

John, his wife Terri and two children - Taylor (9) and Megan (7) have lived in San Ramon for the past 4 years. Prior to that they were working and living overseas for 8 years with approx 2 years each in France, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Italy. Terri and John are originally Canadian.

Vinnie Heumann - Head Goaltender Coach

Vinnie has taught goaltenders for over a decade with the Blue Devils and brings his enthusiastic knowledge and energy to our kids.

Vinnie assisted with the Midget 18A Norcal/CAHA State Championship Team in 2006-2007 and returns for another great season in 07-08.

Bill Davis - Head Coach Pee Wee B or Bantam B

We welcome Coach Bill back to our club after a small hiatus. Coach Bill obtained his Level 5 Master Coaching card in 1986 and came to us in 1989 and coached his way from Mites all the way to the Midget level and then onto AA. Coach Bill has a Southwest Champion Banner to his name for Bantam A and has coached his way to 3 appearances to the State Champion games here in California .

Born in Oakland and raised in Hayward Coach Bill lives with his wife of almost 21 years and his 3 children, William, Courtney and Chelsey. While not on the ice Coach Bill enjoys his fishing..
