They with under 5 minutes left, Michael Hahn would net the eventual game winner. His shot hit the glove of Sharks netminder Nolan Bivolcic, rolled down his arm and back and into the net. Two minutes later Jordan Smith got Tri Valley an insurance goal with assists going to Atwater and Patrick Melville. Sinicropi got the victory in goal making 15 saves.

In a "must win" game against regular season champion Oakland, the Blue Devils lost 7-4 and saw their post season hopes come to an end. The contest was tight in the early going. The Blue Devils finished the season a much better team than when they began with tryouts last August. Vast improvement was seen in all areas of the game and at all positions. TVMHA Mite X -- Valencia Holiday Fest 2007 Champions! by Rob Cassetti

For those interested in thrill-seeking, adrenaline rushes, and white knuckle adventure, many holiday travelers through Southern California head to Magic Mountain.  Nestled into the Valencia hills, the park features stomach churning roller coasters such as "Superman" and "Goliath" that drop riders from over 250 feet at 85 miles per hour.

On Sunday, just down the road from the twisting towers of steel, the Tri-Valley Blue Devils took their fans, friends and family on a magical, thrilling, and inspiring ride unmatched by any machine or mountain.  As they've done all year, the Mite X squad once again played their own version of David.  In this chapter, the mythical Goliath was played by a scrappy group of bigger, older and very determined challengers - the Bakersfield Dragons.

After cruising through their first four tournament games, the Blue Devils mettle was tested early and throughout the championship game.  Determined to slow down the powerful Blue Devil offense, the Dragons played a tough brand of old-time hockey from the drop of the puck and took an early 2-0 lead.  Displaying some awesome puck carrying skills, Mike Carranza jump started the Devils defense to close the gap 2-1 at the end of the first tilt.

The Dragons kept up the pressure.  Colby Moore and Jeremy Goldhawk made a series of key defensive plays to break up Dragon odd man rushes, pushing the puck to the boards and out of harms way.  Rookie stand outs JT Wechsler, Ryan Brown, and Joey Cassetti provided a huge lift on the penalty kill showing the kind of poise and resolve not generally seen from younger players - diving shot blocks, clearing passes, attacking the net, and setting up scoring plays with passes on the rush.  Elijah Aqualina, another first year Devil, was a rock on the blue line trapping every Dragon attempt to clear the zone and adding an offensive outburst with a wicked hard wrist shot from the top of the right face off circle.

The Devils broke from intermission needing to rally from a 2 point deficit entering the final period.  From the stands fans saw the fortitude in every Devils players eyes.  Their confidence was earned - earlier this season the Devils came back from deficits against more experienced teams to tie the San Jose Sharks and Santa Clara Blackhawks.  The noise in the arena rose as both Devils and Dragons supporters cheered on their heroes.

Behind every championship team is a core of veterans anchoring the squad.  Brian Adams, Ethan Miller, Jake Colombo, Jared Minton, Justin Hertz and Mike Carranza had been through the battles and were ready to rally the team.  Using their experience and uncanny awareness of where their line-mates would be, the veterans led the Devils to a 3-goal charge in the third period with a series of one-on-one battles, crisp passes, and second e efforts to convert rebounds sending the game to sudden-death overtime.

The coaches did their part to prepare the Devils for the extra period.  The players understood the X's and O's and where to be on the ice.  But in overtime of the championship game, there is no substitute for heart and teamwork.  It's hard to know the source, but there is something special about the Devils when they play from behind.  Maybe it's the time together on the road - the knee hockey, the pizza, the Shirley Temples they wouldn't ordinarily be allowed to drink.  Whatever it is, there is a bond that unites the team.  Although every fan was nervous and knew that one bad bounce in the Dragons favor could end this magical ride, there was a tangible sense that overtime would belong to the boys from Tri-Valley.

On the first shift of sudden-death overtime, goalie and first-y ear player Ian Montesanti didn't have time to check the playbook when the Dragon forwards rushed into the Devils zone.  Instead, he relied on instinct and a season's worth of sweat and effort.  Ian's kick save on a low wrister destined for the inside corner from the Dragon's Captain brought the crowd to its feet.  The Devils quickly cleared the zone and attacked the Dragons net-minder.  In a blur of action in front of the net, Ethan Miller found his right wing, Justin Hertz open in the high slot.  Justin wasted no time in burying the chance.

It was a Championship game for the ages.  Neither team deserved to lose.  The Dragons were valiant in defeat.  The Blue Devils rushed onto the ice and wild frenzy of celebration began on the ice and in the stands.  Was there any Blue Devil player that didn't clutch their silver championship cup the entire 300 mile trip home?  Did any Blue Devil wake up Monday morning without a smile?  What a game.  What a team.  ; Go Blue Devils - 2007 Valencia Holiday Festival Champions.
