On Saturday we held our first Girls Open House event at Dublin Iceland. We supplied all the hockey gear a girl could need, wrapped them in pink tape, and threw them on the ice for an hour and a half. Every girl had a blast with smiles ear to ear and asking when is the next practice? Veteran Tri-Valley coach, John Young, will be heading the team at the behest of his 10 year old daughter who is now a hockey fan.
Johanna Asher, the Director of the Lady Blue Devils, put on quite a show. She talked to enthusiastic parents, had some guest speakers (2 girls going to college, helped by their hockey skills), showed a video of a 16U girls nationals game, supplied snacks, and spoke to the press (the Contra Costa Times covered the event)!
Our open house was a historic event, building a girls program like this from scratch. The three main/surviving girls programs in California are NHL-related teams: Jr. Sharks, Jr. Kings, and the Jr. Ducks. We are holding a second open house event in September.
